The oil, gas and energy industry contributes about 20% to the GDP of Malaysia and is recognised as the sector that will be the main emphasis in the future. There are more than 3,500 businesses that are focused on oil and gas in Malaysia. International and private companies, service providers and manufacturers support and fulfil the chain supply needs of the oil and gas industry at the domestic and regional levels. Currently, numerous global machinery and equipment manufacturing companies are based in Malaysia to complement the local machinery and equipment companies, while other Malaysian oil and gas companies focus on strategic segments such as marine, drilling, engineering, fabrication, offshore installations and operations and maintenance. This module discusses the process of installing piping systems for the oil and gas industry. The process of fittings in the piping system is connecting pipes that are suitable in terms of size or shape for the purpose of controlling or calculating fluid flows. The term piping system in general is used to depict the flow of water, gas or liquids in a domestic or commercial environment. Pipe fitting requires money, time, materials and special equipment. Therefore, pipe fitting is also part of a system that is complex and one that requires specific skills. The scope of work for an oil and gas pipe fitter is plate cutting, pipe cutting, plate grinding, basic welding and also fabrication of pipes according to predetermined specifications.
